Colombia has four types of vehicle fuel. Knowing the differences helps you choose the right one.
Regular Gasoline
87 Octane
The most commonly used fuel in Colombia. Suitable for most vehicles with engines up to 1.6L.
Premium Gasoline
95 Octane
Recommended for high-compression and turbocharged engines and higher-displacement vehicles.
Diesel / ACPM
Heavy fuel
For trucks, buses, and pickups. Pricing varies by region.
Natural Gas (CNG)
Clean alternative
The most economical and eco-friendly option. Very popular in Bogotá, Medellín, and Bucaramanga.
Fill up in the city
Prices vary by department. Plan your fill-ups in major cities.
Check the octane rating
Using lower-octane fuel than recommended can damage the engine over time.
Certified stations
Always buy at EDS stations certified by the Ministry of Mines.
Main Highways
Colombia has an ever-expanding road network. Check road conditions before you leave.
Autopista del Café and Ruta del Sol. Modern 4G toll highways.
Ruta del Sol sections 1, 2, and 3. Passes through the Magdalena Medio.
Via the Pan-American Highway. Passes through Girardot, Ibagué, and Quindío.
Mar 1 Highway. Connects the interior with Urabá, Antioquia.
Check road conditions on the INVIAS app before you leave. Rain can cause landslides or temporary closures.
Travel Tips
Prepare your vehicle and travel safely on Colombian roads
Up-to-date documents
Always carry a valid SOAT, vehicle registration, driver's license, and current vehicle inspection.
Emergency kit
Carry safety triangles, reflective vest, first aid kit, fire extinguisher, and a spare tire. Required by law.
Speed limits
Primary roads: 80 km/h. Secondary roads: 60 km/h. Urban areas: 30–50 km/h.
