What is the Technical Inspection?
The Technical-Mechanical and Emissions Inspection (RTM) is a mandatory periodic inspection in Colombia for all vehicles on public roads.
Its purpose is to verify that the vehicle meets road safety technical conditions and that its emissions are within permitted limits.
Driving without a valid inspection incurs a fine of 15 DLMW (~$711,750 COP) and immediate vehicle immobilization.

How often does it need renewal?
All vehicles
The technical inspection is annual for all vehicles, regardless of age or service type. Valid for 1 year.
Exemption for new vehicles
New vehicles are exempt from the RTM for the first 5 years from the date of registration. From year six onwards, the inspection is required every year.
Expiry date
The RTM expires exactly one year after the issue date. You can verify it on the RUNT portal.
No exceptions
Driving without a valid RTM results in a fine of 15 DLMW (~$711,750 COP) and immediate vehicle immobilization.

Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if my vehicle fails the RTM?
The CDA issues an unfavorable report. You have up to 60 days to fix the issues and return for a courtesy re-inspection.
Can I get the RTM done at any CDA in the country?
Yes. You can get the inspection done at any RUNT-approved CDA anywhere in Colombia.
How long does the inspection take?
The full process takes between 20 and 45 minutes depending on the vehicle type.
What documents do I need to bring to the CDA?
Bring your vehicle registration, a valid driver's license, and a valid SOAT insurance certificate.
