Transmission fluid is one of the most overlooked fluids in vehicle maintenance, but also one of the most critical.
Section 1 — What is it and what does it do?
Transmission fluid lubricates the gears, acts as hydraulic fluid, dissipates heat, and protects metal surfaces against corrosion.
Section 2 — Types of transmission fluid
ATF for automatics, MTF for manuals, and CVT fluid for continuously variable transmissions. Never swap types without consulting the manual.
Section 3 — How to check the level and condition
Check with the transmission dipstick with the engine warm. Translucent red is healthy; dark red means wear; dark brown or burnt smell means urgent replacement.
Section 4 — Signs it needs changing
Harsh gear shifts, gear slipping, whining noises when maneuvering, and delay when shifting from Park to Drive are signs of deterioration.
Section 5 — Change intervals
Automatics: every 30,000–60,000 km. Manuals: every 40,000–80,000 km. CVT: every 30,000–40,000 km. In Colombia, shorter intervals are recommended.
Section 6 — How is the change performed?
The process involves draining the old fluid, cleaning the pan magnet, replacing the filter if accessible, and refilling with the exact specified fluid.
Section 7 — Common mistakes to avoid
Using the wrong fluid is the most serious mistake. Doing a flush on a heavily worn transmission or not checking the level after the change are also dangerous.
