Air Filter Guide: When and How to Change Them

The air filter protects the engine from dust and dirt particles. In high-traffic Colombian cities, filters get dirty faster.
Section 1 — What is an air filter?
The air filter retains solid particles before air enters the engine. A combustion engine needs approximately 14.7 parts of air per part of fuel.
Section 2 — Types of air filters
There are three types: paper filter (most common), washable cotton filter (K&N type), and foam filter. Do not confuse with the cabin filter.
Section 3 — When to change the filter
It is recommended to inspect the filter every 10,000 km and replace it between 15,000 and 20,000 km. In dusty areas, the interval may be reduced to 5,000 km.
Section 4 — Signs of a dirty filter
A clogged filter can increase fuel consumption by 10–25%, reduce engine power, and in some cases trigger the Check Engine light.
Section 5 — How to change the filter step by step
Turn off the engine, locate the filter box, release the clips, remove the old filter, clean the inside of the box, install the new filter, and close the lid.
Section 6 — Tips and common mistakes
Never wash a paper filter with water. Always use a reputable brand filter. Take advantage of every oil change to visually inspect the air filter.
