How to Change Your Car's Oil Step by Step

An oil change is one of the most important maintenance tasks for your vehicle. Clean oil protects the engine, reduces friction, and improves fuel performance. In Colombia, it is recommended to change the oil every 5,000 to 7,500 kilometers depending on the type of oil and driving conditions.
Step 1 — Gather the materials
You will need: new oil (check the owner's manual for the exact type and quantity), a new oil filter, a filter wrench, a container for used oil, a hydraulic jack or ramps, clean rags, and gloves.
Step 2 — Warm up the engine briefly
Start the engine for 2 to 3 minutes. This slightly warms the oil, making it less viscous and allowing it to drain more easily.
Step 3 — Lift and secure the vehicle
Use a hydraulic jack to lift the vehicle and place safety stands under the support points indicated in the manual.
Step 4 — Drain the old oil
Locate the oil pan drain plug. Place the container below and remove the plug by turning counterclockwise.
Step 5 — Replace the oil filter
Using the filter wrench, remove the oil filter. Before installing the new filter, apply a little new oil to the rubber gasket.
Step 6 — Pour in the new oil
Reinstall the drain plug. Open the oil filler cap on top of the engine and slowly pour in the new oil using a funnel.
Step 7 — Check the level and look for leaks
Start the engine and let it run for 1 to 2 minutes. Check the level with the dipstick and look under the vehicle for any leaks.
Step 8 — Dispose of used oil properly
Used oil is a pollutant. Pour it into a sealed container and take it to an authorized collection point or service station.
